A Moment of Silence 11.11.11.11

It was exactly 11:11 am, yesterday, on 11/11 when the speaker announced to bow our heads for a moment of silence.  The tent was filled with love, humility, remembrance, calmness and an overwhelming feeling of success and accomplishment.  

This was an amazing experience, sitting among those who were involved with protecting our freedom and rights as a nation.  In fact, this was the humblest and proudest that I have ever witnessed my father, Mark Gould, as he sat in the crowd and was truly a part of this honoring ceremony and was not even expected to speak.

As we sat in the tent, I could not help but to notice that ALL of the service people were well poised, gentle, kind, humble and from every culture.  Men and women were equal and were only addressed by rank.  There were no barriers and everyone was bound by their service to our country.  What a beautiful day and a beautiful place to be in.

My mind was also intently thinking on those in my own family, past a present, that are a part of this wonderful “non-culture”.  We have so many in our past that also served and I would like to honor those with a few pictures that I found in my collection.

This Veterans Day ceremony in Delaware was to honor all those living and dead that gave their unconditional hearts, minds and bodies to protect us.  This was also to honor those that have taken on the torch to end homelessness. 

The Veterans in our country are suffering a large number of homelessness and have not asked for assistance.  This was noticed by the Vice President Joe Biden and First Lady, Michelle Obama, and in 2010, they made this there mission to end Veterans homelessness.

Delaware announced yesterday that it was the third state to achieve 100% of housed Veterans.  This success was due in large part from the tireless work of Mr. Dave Mosley from the Delaware Center for Homeless Veterans along with the DE Housing Authority and the VA.

Our agency, Native American Advancement Corp. (NAAC) was invited because of Mr. Mosley, by Governor Jack Markell, to participate in this ceremony; to honor those in the mission of ending homelessness.  We have been asked to do whatever we can in New Jersey to carry this torch and to model their success.

NAAC’s mission is community development and the most important part of this is housing!  We have made it our mission to aide those in need to become homeowners, including Veterans.  We have received funding from BB&T to address this mission and this has led to our partnership with Mr. Mosley in Delaware.

Yesterday was simply amazing.  Never in my wildest imagination, would I have thought that would I be in the same space as these great leaders.  Since social media is so readily available, I just could not wait to post the pictures of our meeting with our great Vice President, Joe Biden.  But in fact, we met several great people, including the Secretary of the United States Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Mr. Julian Castro.

What a day, what an honor!  When I describe yesterday, Veterans Day, I can only think of a homemade apple dumpling, made with Sunny Slope Winesap apples, warm out of the oven, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top melting into the cracks and mixing with the caramelized hot apple syrup!

In closing, I can humbly say that it is a pleasure to serve those who served me and I am looking forward to learning from you all.

Mark “Quiet Hawk” Gould is known among his people, the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indian Tribe of New Jersey, as a leader who has worked tirelessly on their behalf since the 1970s, when he was part of a core group of tribal citizens who launched a modern-day re-organization of the ancient tribe.

A pragmatist known for his dedication and energy, Chief Gould has been a longtime advocate for improving the economic and educational opportunities for tribal citizens. He believes deeply in preserving the tribe’s traditional culture, customs, and values, and is especially interested in working with Elders and youth.

He initiated the incorporation of the tribe as a nonprofit entity under the laws of the State of New Jersey, a step which was finalized in 1978. Also that year, he became the first elected Tribal Chairman under the modern-day structure of the tribe. Another significant milestone occurred in 1982, when the tribe earned State Recognition.

He served as the leader of the movement to form the American Indian Council of New Jersey, and was elected as that organization’s first Chairman. He initiated the introduction of the Senate Bill calling for the creation of the Commission of Indian Affairs for the State of New Jersey, which was signed into law in 1995. He helped to create a Confederation among Lenape Tribes in the U.S. and Canada.

Chief Gould has represented the tribe on many occasions, including at the historic meeting in Washington, D.C. between all Tribes in the Nation and President William Jefferson “Bill” Clinton, and the opening of the Smithsonian’s Museum of the American Indian, in 2004.

In 1994, he was chosen by Governor Christie Whitman as a member of the New Jersey Commission on National Service. He received the Thurgood Marshall Humanitarian Award from the Cumberland County, N.J., Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in April 1996. As the recipient of that award, he was recognized by the Board of Chosen Freeholders of Cumberland County; by U.S. Congressman Frank LoBiondo; and U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg. In 2001, he was honored by the Committee on Native American Ministries of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Professionally, he is a trained carpenter who has owned his own contracting business. Since 2000, He is currently the Vice President and Weatherization Manager for Native American Advancement Corp. since 2009 and has expended over 10 million dollars of services to needy families. He is also Deputy Chief Officer of Turtle Associates, a construction company owned by the tribe.

A 1960 graduate of Bridgeton (N.J.) High School, he attended Cumberland County College, Atlantic Community College, and Gloucester County College.

First Steps When Buying a Home

Buying a home is a serious step that you must be careful about. Everyone gets really excited about buying their first home, but they tend to jump in the decision to quickly. You must go through a few steps before you make your purchase.  The purchasing process can go fast, but if you understand your situation and the details of the home, then you should not have buyer’s remorse.

The first step to buying a home is figuring out the benefits of the home. You need to decide what makes the home so perfect. You need to think about the house and its location. List all the benefits that you will get from purchasing the home. You may end up in a perfect location for children or close to your job. What makes you want to purchase the home the most? Then you should also figure out what about the home do you dislike?  You need to weigh the pros against the cons. You need to make sure that this purchase is not going to be something that you will regret in the end. If you ever doubt the purchase you should take a pass on the house. You should also pass on the house if the realtor is pressuring you. If you feel pressured there has to be a reason why they are rushing you into the decision and you might end up regretting it afterwards.

 Also, when you go to purchase a home, consider what you must have. You will look at dozens of homes, but if they don't have what you are looking for, then you must move on. When you define what you are looking for you will end up getting exactly what you want. You need to think about the size of the home, the yard, the other benefits that most homes have, as well as, those things that you would like to have, but don't necessarily need.

When it comes to timing, you should think about how much time you have and how leisurely you would like to shop around. Some people wait years to finally make a pick and some can find a home within days. The timing is all about your needs. You may need to allow yourself some time to find what you are looking for and don't allow yourself to get frustrated with the pressure of time.

Also you should know that when you go to look at homes, you will look at many. You need to be patient and not run into a deal. You need to make sure that the house you make an offer on has exactly what you are looking for and within your price range. You should make sure that you feel that you have looked at enough homes to make one of the biggest decisions of your life time.

Buying A Home


There is nothing easy about buying a home. You have to be prepared to go through with the entire process. It can be long and even a little frustrating at times. It is not something that will happen overnight and in fact, you have to be able to make this a great experience that will make your dreams come true in the end.  You will end up with the home that you have always wanted.

Getting the opportunity to buy a home is special.  It will take a lot of hard work and preparing to get to this point. You have to make sure that you have all of your finances in order so that you can make all the right decisions for your home buying experience. You need to make sure that your credit is good so that you can get a decent interest rate that you can feel good about.
